Population is 29,665 (2001). Perevalsk was founded in 1889 as Seleznyovsky Mine, for the workers in coal mining. Over time it grew by insorporating similar miner's settlements. In 1924 it was renamed to the Settlement of Paris Commune (abbreviated Parkommuna) In 1938 it became town of Parkommuna, and in 1964 it acquired its present name.
